Heinrich Böll Residency for an Irish-Language Artist Based in the Gaeltacht

A teal-coloured, hand-painted circle with rough, uneven edges evokes a traditional Japanese ensō symbol and hints at Ealaín na Gaeltachta influence. The design rests on a white background and the circle is not fully closed.

Application deadline: 30 October 2026

The Heinrich Böll Association is inviting applications from artists based in the Gaeltacht (writers, musicians, and visual artists) who create work in the Irish language, for a two-week residency at the Heinrich Böll Cottage on Achill Island in 2027.

Available dates: 14 August – 28 August 2027

Supported by Ealaín na Gaeltachta and the Heinrich Böll Cottage Association, the residency offers:

  • A €600 stipend
  • Accommodation

Artists are responsible for their own food, materials, and travel expenses.

This is a unique retreat, ideal for those seeking a peaceful and inspiring stay away from the distractions of everyday life. The residency is designed to allow guests to focus entirely on their creative work, while drawing inspiration from Achill Island and potentially incorporating it into their artistic practice.

The cottage includes:

  • Two bedrooms
  • A kitchen
  • A living room
  • Two study rooms
  • A studio

There is no telephone or internet connection at the cottage.

Artists are also invited, if they wish, to visit local schools or community clubs on the island and share their work through public readings or presentations.

Application deadline: 30 October 2026
